Bad Economy - Bad Excuses

Hi All,

Many of us blame the economy for our lack of art sales. We say, "they can't buy art because gas is too much" or some other lame reason why "they" stopped buying your art. For the record, I think most of the art buying public would agree that the price of gas and the price of (your) artwork are two very different things. If your clients are having financial troubles (and some may) then understand, you may have to find new customers! Why is that so difficult? I read blog after blog...comment after comment, and article after article telling artists to hunker down. The economy is in the tank, find a new career path, whatever!

One thing is clear...the economy has its ups and its downs. We are having a hard time right now but there are some people still buying art. Find them, paint what they like and make them your friend. Hey folks, it ain't rocket science...some people (and you know who they are) are living as well as they did before the recession. Some of these people are still buying art without regard to the market conditions.

Paint it, sell it, and paint another one. Find customers, stay in contact with past customers, work hard at pleasing your customers. I have not had a drop in original sales since the recession. The only sales issues I have are with the reproductions and post cards. In my studio, original artwork is selling just as well (or better) now compared to all the years I've been doing this. The less expensive reproductions have slacked off because I feel customers are not feeling pressured to buy it "right now" - they will wait until the economy is better.

There you have it...don't make excuses; make art. Yeah, the economy is bad right now. Are you going to wait and paint when it gets better or are you going to take advantage of the new challenges that face you?

Michael
